Experience Three Weekends of Live Art and Culture at the SFMOMA Mini Mural Festival

San Francisco Museum of Modern Art

Your chance to experience art in action will take place throughout the month of August at the SFMOMA Mini Mural Festival. In partnership with three local organizations, SFMOMA is bringing together artists to create 8’x8′ murals, live, in the outdoor alleyway of their Howard Street entrance. These free, community-based live art events will be accompanied by music, dance, and other activities for the entire family. The theme of the 2021 Mini Mural Festival is cross-cultural solidarity.

Weekend 1 – July 31, 2021-August 1, 2021: Acción Latina

Presented in partnership with Acción Latina, watch Salvadoran American artist, painter and muralist Josué Rojas create a work of art in his signature style, blending modern and classical influences of pop art, poster art, Chicano- and Mexican-heritage murals, classical painting and drawing, and more. Joining Rojas will be DJ Agana, an internationally acclaimed multi-dimensional contemporary artist who explores the connection between traditional murals and contemporary street art covering themes of black liberation, women’s empowerment, and environmental and racial justice issues.

On Saturday, July, 31 Rojas and Agana’s live mural-creating experience will be accompanied by a soul and oldies DJ set from Chulita Vinyl Club, Yucatecan Jarana dance and music from Grupo Jaranero Yucatán. On Sunday, August 1, they will be accompanied by a reggae ton, Cuban timber and Afro-Caribbean set from DJ Leydis, and samba music dance performance from Batuci.

Weekend 2 – August 14, 2021 – August 15, 2021: NIAD Art Center

Hosted by NIAD Art Center, a contemporary visual arts program in Richmond, CA serving seventy adult artists with intellectual and developmental disabilities, the Mini Mural experience will feature live art-creation by a bevy of artists including Andres Cisneros-Galindo, Nan Collymore, Christian Vassell, Miguel Chacon, Julio Del Rio, Luis Estrada, Deatra Colbert, Esmeralda Silva, Felicia Griffin, Jonathan Valdivias, and Shana Harper. Live music, DJs, and other activities will complement the live art experience.

Weekend 3 – August 28, 2021 – August 29, 2021: SOMA Pilipinas

In partnership with SOMA Pilipinas, San Francisco’s Filipino Cultural Heritage District honoring the 120+ year history of Filipinos in San Francisco, the third and final weekend of the Mini Mural Festival will feature artists Franceska Gamez and Malaya Tuyay. Experience these artists’ live creations representing the SOMA Pilipinas mission of celebrating culture, building community, and fighting for economic and racial justice in the rapidly gentrifying South of Market neighborhood.
