Hailing from the indigenous Wolastoq people of New Brunswick, Jeremy Dutcher is a classically-trained tenor. He won Canada’s prestigious Polaris Music Prize last year with his debut album Wolastoqiyik Lintuwakonawa. Curently living in Tornto, Dutcher found his musical mission working in the Canadian Museum of History’s archives. He painstakingly transcribed Wolastoq songs from 1907 wax cylinders. Long days at the archives turned into long nights at the piano as he created songs in deep dialogue with the voices of his ancestors. Unapologetically playful in incorporating classical influences, Dutcher’s music transcends boundaries of language, time and style.
